Saluyot (Jute) – use and benefits

Saluyot (Corchorus olitorius) is a consumable verdant vegetable that is an individual from the variety Corchorus, arranged under the subfamily Grewioideae of the family Malvaceae. Saluyot is broadly found in tropical and subtropical zones from Asia to Africa esteemed as food and for its solid fiber.

Saluyot leaves are nutritious, it is plentiful in calcium, iron, protein, nutrient A, C and E, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, and dietary filaments. Saluyot is generally cooked as stew, creating a thick syrup comparable in consistency to okra normally taken with rice or other staple.

Saluyot can be found anywhere in the Philippines being hardy and requiring little maintenance. It grows abundantly in farmed environments as well as in the wild.

The interesting fact is that it is also used as fabric material. The fibers of the Saluyot orJute plant are also widely used in making packing materials, furniture, and carpets. Saluyot is frequently known as jute whose fibers are spun into a variety of product.

Jute is a long, soft, shiny vegetable fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads.  Jute is the second most important vegetable fiber after cotton due to its versatility. It is used chiefly to make cloth for wrapping bales of raw cotton, and to make sacks and coarse cloth.
